Mood Octopus

Just a quick, easy pattern for a mood octopus.

My older kid has been obsessed with the various mood toys that he can flip to show different emotions, so I made a couple of cute octopi for us.

They double nicely as cat hats.

Terminology

  • mc: magic circle
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • st: stitch
  • ch: chain
  • slst: slip stitch
  • inc: increase
  • 3dc-inc: 3dc in one st
  • FO: finish off

Materials

  • yarn in 2 preferred colors
  • yarn needle

Yarn: 4/worsted.  

Hook: G/4mm

Pattern:

Make 2, using different colors

*work in continuous rounds

R1: 6sc in mc (6)

R2: 6inc (12)

R3: (sc, inc)x6 (18)

R4: (2sc, inc)x6 (24)

R5-12: 24sc (8 rows, 192st)

R13: ch1, (3dc-inc, sc)x12, slst to first st (48)

Details

  • Stitch faces using the other color of yarn. Make sure the faces show two different emotions.
  • Turn one piece inside out and place inside the other (wrong sides should be together). 
  • Align ruffles and sew the two pieces together.
  • The finished piece can be flipped to show either face.
